AP Chemistry vs SAT Chemistry: Differences

These are the differences between the two types of tests.

Purpose of the exam

Students usually take the AP chemistry test to get out of expensive classes in college.

This exam assesses a student’s caliber by testing their abilities in college-level classes.

Whereas, SAT chemistry is a good subject test to have on your application to make it stand out. Many colleges require you to take at least 2 subjects SATs depending on your preferred course.

Format of the exam

The SAT chemistry test is an hour-long exam which has 85 multiple-choice questions.

On the other hand, AP chemistry is a 3 hour 15 minutes long test and has 67 questions in total, 60 multiple-choice questions, and 7 short questions to solve.

Students are not allowed to use a calculator in the SAT chemistry test. However, students can use a calculator in AP chemistry but only for the 7 short questions, not for multiple-choice questions.

Frequency of the test

The AP chemistry test is conducted once a year in May. Students need to register before March 2 to be able to give this test. The total fees for this test are $91.

The SAT Chemistry exam can be given in May, June, October, November, and December. Registrations must be done at least a month before the exam.

The total fees for appearing are $42; however, it is variable.

To sum up

Students need to be well-versed with the basic concepts of chemistry before given either of these tests. They are not very easy and scoring well in them can be difficult if you are underprepared.

So, understand your motive behind giving these tests and figure out which one is better for you. After that, you can focus on preparing well!
